An equipment drawing is generally associated with the equipment specification and provides the information required for the procurement of the equipment. An assembly drawing gives an overall representation of an item or one of its main subassemblies or parts and when read in conjunction with the associated Equipment Specification allows the Purchaser to check that the Contractual Specifications are followed.

The equipment drawing specifies the dimensional and functional interfaces and furnishes the data required for equipment layout. It also prescribes the data and details imposed on the manufacturer of the equipment e.g. main dimensions and arrangement of interfaces (connections, orientations etc.).

An assembly drawing will show the component part referenced indication used in the parts list, main component dimensions, tolerances where appropriate and other relevant characteristics.
