（一）虚证：
(Ⅰ) Deficiency Syndrome:
虚证（包括生理条件下的衰老）的病理以逆向重演生物个体发育和系统发育过程为主要特点（逆向重演律，retro-recapitulation law）。逆向重演表现为：
The pathology of deficiency syndrome (including the physical aging) is mainly featured with the reversed recapitulation of individual and system development of organisms (retro-recapitulation law). Retro-recapitulation is represented as follows:
〇 一方面有序度高（高层次）的结构、功能强度减弱；
〇 On the one hand, the highly ordered (high-level) structures and functions weaken;
〇 另一方面有序度低（低层次）的结构、功能强度相对或绝对增强。甚至胚胎型基因重新激活和表达，导致蛋白质、抗原、酶等产物和功能的胚胎化。
〇 On the other hand, low-ordered (low-level) structures and functions strengthen relatively or absolutely. Even embryonic genes are re-activated and expressed, resulting in the embryonization of functions and products like proteins, antigens and enzymes.
逆向重演病理的原理在于由于虚损导致细胞、组织的能量减少，熵增加，其再生修复和功能代偿阻滞于越来越低级的中间状态直至原始状态。
The principles of retro-recapitulation pathology are: due to deficiency, the energy of cells and tissues decrease while the entropy increase, their regeneration and functional compensation are blocked in the reducing middle state until it goes down to the origin.

（二）虚证与实证的不对称性：
(Ⅱ) Asymmetry of Deficiency Syndrome and Excess Syndrome
生物体是自组织系统，其能量水平的自然方向是增高，因此，只有降低才是异常。也就是说，在生物体立体的病理上实证与虚证并不对称，只有虚证。
Organisms are self-organizing systems, the natural direction of which is upward. Therefore, only reduction is abnormal. In other words, deficiency syndrome and excess syndrome are asymmetric in terms of the three-dimensional pathology of organisms and only deficiency syndrome exists.
中医发现了虚证与实证在人体病理上的这种不对称性：
TCM has discovered found such asymmetry between deficiency syndrome and excess syndrome in the human body pathology:
〇 固有病理只有虚证，实热、实火类实证只见于反应性病理。
〇 Innate pathology is only shown by deficiencies, and excess syndromes like excess heat and fire are of reactive pathology.
〇 实热、实火类实证有机体功能层次的增高，但其之所以成为病理，是因其能量代谢增高。
〇 Excess syndromes like excess heat and fire are the increase of functional levels of organisms. They become pathology only because of the enhancement of energy metabolism.
（三）寒证和热证：
(Ⅲ) Cold Syndrome and Heat Syndrome
寒证、热证（实质是机体能量代谢的降低、增高）和功能层次（反映机体蕴涵的能量）统一于能量。能量代谢的降低、增高本质上源于功能层次的降低、增高。
Cold syndrome and heat syndrome (actually the decrease and increase of the body's energy metabolism) and the functional levels (reflecting the energy contained in the body) are unified in energy. The reduction and enhancement of energy metabolism essentially root from the decrease and increase of functional levels.
